National Certificate: N1-N3

About this programme:
This is the traditional Apprentice career path to becoming an artisan.
After completing N2, the apprentice will also be required to complete the institutionalised modular training or Competency Based Modular Training (CBMT). These modules are facilitated in 3-4 blocks of 10 weeks (each block being a level). After successful completion and workplace experience, the apprentice may apply for the Trade Test.

Electrical Engineering: N4-N6 available via Distance Learning     

Admission requirements:

  • N1: Grade 11 with Maths/ (minimum 50% pass) or Gr 12 with Maths / (Maths Lit 50%)
  • N2: N1 or equivalent
  • N3: N2 or equivalent

Job opportunities:
You will be able to take up a position as an apprentice or learner technician to gain necessary industrial experience to be able to take a trade test in your chosen trade.

Subjects

N1 Certificate

  • Mathematics (all trades)
  • Engineering Science (only mechanical and electrical trades)
  • Building Drawing (only civil trades)
  • Engineering Drawing (only fitter and turners and motor trades)or Industrial Electronics (only electrical trade) or Plating and Structural Steel Drawing (only fabricators and welders)
  • With one of the following Trade subjects: Motor Mechanics/ Electrical /Plumbing/ Fitting and Turning / Carpentry/Fabrication

 N2 Certificate

  • Mathematics (all trades)
  • Engineering Science (only mechanical and electrical trades)
  • Building Drawing (only civil trades)
  • Engineering Drawing (only fitter and turners and motor trades) or Industrial Electronics (only electrical trade) or Plating and Structural Steel Drawing (only fabricators and welders)
  • With one of the following Trade subjects: Motor Mechanics/ Electrical / Plumbing/ Fitting and Turning / Carpentry/Fabrication

N3 Compulsory Subjects

  • Mathematics
  • Engineering Science
  • Mechanical course: Engineering Drawing and Mechanotechnology
  • Electrical course: Industrial Electronics and Electrotechnology

Duration:
Each “N” Certificate level is one trimester (10 weeks)
