The Sky is the Limit

The residents of Muizenberg and surrounding communities gathered at the Zandvlei Nature Reserve to gaze towards the skies at the 24th annual Cape Town International Kite Festival.

False Bay TVET College, a College institution that embeds an inclusive education ethos, rallied its staff and students to volunteer at the 2-day event. Providing logistical support at the event, IMG 20181029 074906 739students were required to attend an information session prior to the event. Busiswa Luqhide, False Bay TVET College Marketing and Exhibitions Officer said, “A mental disability is not always as obvious as a physical one, that’s why we need to be considerate of everyone we meet. This event reminds our students to be compassionate and grateful for all that they have. As my first Kite Festival, I was really impressed with the enthusiasm the staff and students demonstrated towards the event.”

False Bay TVET College also participated in the Casual Day campaign earlier this year and raised a donation of R 1800.00 for Cape Mental Health.

False Bay TVET College is currently assisting 163 students with disabilities. Disabilities range from physical disabilities, sensory disabilities (e.g. mild hearing impairment, visual impairment, blindness), mental health conditions and specific learning disabilities (attention deficit disorders, dyslexia, and language processing disorders).

The College has a long-standing partnership with Cape Mental Health who rely heavily on the goodwill of the public and businesses to make each year’s event possible.
Darren Maybe, Safety in Society student at False Bay TVET College, said “this is my second year volunteering at the Kite Festival. I want to give back to the institution of False Bay TVET College and enjoy supporting worthy initiatives like Cape Mental Health.”

The Cape Town International Kite Festival is still Africa's biggest kite festival.  The outdoor event makes for a great family day with loads of activities and entertainment.
Festival visitors were able to enjoy professional kiting displays from kite flyers from around the world or for a more hands-on experience participate in kite-making competitions and workshops.
