NSFAS Bursary Application FAQ

What is NSFAS?   
NSFAS is an abbreviation for National Student Financial Aid Scheme  
Who qualifies for the NSFAS bursary? • Financially needy and academically deserving students.
• South African Citizens
• Applicants who want to apply to study an NC(V) or NATED Full-Time N1-N6 programmes.
What are the application requirements? • You need to be accepted with a college to study a NC(V) or NATED Full-Time N1-N6 programme
• All applicants need to have a reliable mobile number to receive NSFAS communications regarding your bursary application.
How do I apply for a NSFAS Bursary? All new applicants must apply at the College or Campus where the programme is offered.
 What documents are required when applying for the NSFAS Bursary?  • Certified copy of a valid South African Identity Document/card.
• Certified copy of unabridged birth certificate (If you do not have a green bar-coded ID or smart ID card) if you are under 18 years old.
• Certified copy of ID of each household member including parents or legal guardian.
• Parent/Legal Guardian/spouse who is working to please provide SARS Income Tax number
• Certified copy of a valid Senior Certificate (If you have completed Grade 12).
• Certified copy of the latest academic results
• A copy of your proof of residence (see the checklist at the end for more information and examples of suitable documents).
• Completed consent form which can be downloaded off the NSFAS website before you complete your online application.
What are the Academic and Financial requirements for the Bursary?  NSFAS grants preference to academically strong applicants.
Applicants household annual income must not exceed R122 000 per annum.
 What does the DHET NSFAS BURSARY cover?  The bursary covers books and your tuition
 When are the Bursary applications open for 2018?  Bursary applications for 2018 are open from 01 August 2017– 30 November 2017
 Should returning students apply?  All Students currently receiving NSFAS funding DO NOT HAVE TO RE-APPLY.
Funding will be granted provided the funded student meets the NSFAS academic requirements. All funded NSFAS applicants are requested to update their information online. Please log onto and create the MyNSFAS account to verify your details.
 Is there an age limit for Bursary applicants?  No there is no age limit for bursary applicants.
 Does the Bursary include funding for Accommodation?  No the Bursary does not include funding for Accommodation
 Is there a gender, race or a religion preference in the selection criteria for the Bursary?  There is no gender, race or religious preference in the selection process for a Bursary.
Does the Bursary include Travel allowance? Transport is only available for bursary applicants who live further than 5kms from the campus and subject to the availability of funds per intake.
Application for a transport allowance is completed separately from a Bursary application.
