Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs)
Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs), established in terms of the section 9(1) of the Skills Development Act of 1998 have become a major feature of South Africa’s educational landscape. SETAs form part of a larger strategy that has the following aims:
- Developing the skills of the South African workforce
- Increasing levels of investment in training and education
- Encouraging employers to, among other things, use the workplace as an active learning environment and to provide employees with opportunities to acquire new skills
- Encouraging workers to participate in learnership and other training programmes
- Redressing the disadvantages brought about by unfair discrimination through training and education
- Ensuring the quality of education and training in and for the workplace
- Assisting work-seekers to find work, retrenched workers to re-enter the marketplace and employers to find quality employees
- Providing and regulating employment services
